Engineered structural walls — segmental block, natural stone, hand-laid.
Most retaining walls fail because no one engineered the back of them.
We build retaining walls as engineering projects, not landscape projects. Geo-grid reinforcement on anything over 30". Free-draining crushed-stone backfill. Filter fabric. Weep holes. The visible face is the result, not the design.
Materials range from segmental block (Versa-Lok, Allan Block, Techo-Bloc) for clean modern walls, to dry-stacked natural stone for organic and historic-feel projects, to mortared full-bed stone for the high-end installations.

The visible surface is the easy part. What lasts is the engineering underneath.
Walls over 4 ft are designed with stamped engineering. Walls under, by spec.
Synthetic grid layers tied into the hill behind the wall — pull strength built in.
Crushed stone backfill + filter fabric + weep holes. Water moves through, not against.
Footings below frost line on structural walls. No spring lift.
Granite or matching stone caps, set on adhesive. Lasts longer than the wall.
Stairs cut into walls as part of the structure — not bolted on.
Versa-Lok, Allan Block, Techo-Bloc. Engineered for grid reinforcement.
New England fieldstone, hand-fit. No mortar visible.
Granite or fieldstone, mortared joints, granite cap. High-end and forever.
Reclaimed Quincy or Cape granite. Heirloom-grade material.
We've built terraced walls up to 12 ft total height. Single tier, typically 4–6 ft is the sweet spot before requiring stamped engineering.
A properly engineered wall on a proper base, drained correctly, lasts 50+ years. We've rebuilt many 15-year-old walls that weren't engineered.
Yes. We build pool retaining walls regularly — coordinated with your pool builder for surcharge loads.
Sometimes — depends on the wall's base. Many old walls are easier and cheaper to replace than rebuild.
Click your town for local examples and lead times. We work across all 27 — these are the towns where retaining walls are most requested.
We've used three contractors over fifteen years. Matt's is the first one I've called back for a second project.
